The Early Tudors

Henry VII   January 28, 1457 to April 9, 1509

Defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field on August 22, 1485 and established himself as the first king of a new Family Dynasty :  The Tudors.


Elizabeth of York   February 11, 1466 to February 11, 1503

Daughter of Edward IV.  Married Henry VII as a means to appease  the York and Lancaster divisions.


Margaret Beaufort   May 31, 1443 to June 29, 1509

Mother of Henry VII 


Arthur Tudor Prince of Wales  September  20, 1486 to April 2, 1502

Eldest son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York.  Married Catherine of Aragon and died 5 months after their wedding at the age of 15.


Henry Tudor (future Henry VIII) June 28, 1491 to January 28, 1547

Second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York.  Became heir to the throne after his brother Arthur‘s death.  Ascended the throne upon his father‘s death on April 9 1509.


Margaret Tudor  November 28, 1489 to October 18, 1541

Daughter of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York.  Married James IV of Scotland.  Grandmother to Mary Queen of Scots


Mary Tudor   March 18, 1496 to June 25, 1533

Daughter of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York.   Married Louis XII of France and was briefly Queen of France .  After the death of her husband she married Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk.  She is the grandmother of the ill fated Lady Jane Grey.  


 


The Six Wives of Henry VIII

Catherine of Aragon

First wife of Henry VIII.  Daughter of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. Born December 16, 1485.      She was first married to Henry‘s brother Arthur.  Married Henry VIII June 11, 1509.  Henry began the Great Matter of his divorce from her in 1527.  Catherine died abandoned on January 7, 1536.

Anne Boleyn

Second wife of Henry VIII.  No known date of birth.  Most historians agree she was born in 1501. Married Henry VIII on January 25, 1533 in a secret ceremony.  She is the mother of Elizabeth I.   She was accused of adultery and treason on trumped up charges and beheaded in the Tower of London on May 19, 1536.

Jane Seymour

Third wife of Henry VIII.  No known date of birth.  Married Henry VIII shortly after the execution of Anne Boleyn, on May 30, 1536.  Died of childbirth fever after giving birth to Henry‘s only son Edward on October 24, 1537.

Anne of Cleves

Fourth wife of Henry VIII.  Married Henry VIII on January 6 ,1540 and divorced six months later on June 9th 1540.

Catherine Howard

Fifth wife of Henry VIII.  Married Henry VIII on June 28, 1540.  Accused of adultery during her brief marriage to the King and beheaded in the Tower of London on February 13, 1542.

Catherine Parr

Sixth wife of Henry VIII.  She was the wife to finally survive him when Henry died in January 1547.  Catherine went on to marry Thomas Seymour, brother of Jane Seymour, and died in childbirth on  September 5, 1548.

The children of Henry VIII

Mary Tudor  February 18, 1516 to November 17, 1558


Daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon.  Became Queen Mary 1 on July 19, 1553.  Because of her persecution of Protestants, she became known as Bloody Mary.  She married Phillip II of Spain and died childless after 5 years on the throne, paving the way for her half sister Elizabeth to become queen.


Elizabeth Tudor  September 7, 1533 to March 24, 1603


Daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.  Became Queen Elizabeth I on November 17, 1558.  She ruled for 45 years.  She is known as the Virgin Queen becasue she never married.  She is also known as Gloriana , and she gave her name to the Elizabethan Golden Age. 


Edward Tudor October 12, 1537 to July 6, 1553


Son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour.  Became King Edward VI upon his fathers death on January 28, 1547.  Died at the age of 15 on July 6, 1553, whereupon Lady Jane Grey was put on the throne against her will for 9 days.


Henry Fitzroy June 15, 1519 to July 23, 1536


Illegitimate son of Henry VIII and his mistress Elizabeth Blount.  Young Fitzroy became Duke of Richmond and died at the age of 17 .


Lady Jane Grey  October 1537 to February 12, 1554


Great Niece of Henry VIII who was put on the throne upon the death of Edward VI. 

The move was an act of treason and Jane was eventually beheaded at age 16 in the Tower of London.
